April Is About to Get More Crowded. A Spark in the Dark and Three More Films Open This Month. What the Calendar Tells Us.

Five Nollywood films are opening in a thirteen-day window this April. Trade by Bata, The Other Side of the Bridge, Avante, A Spark in the Dark, and The Return of Arinzo all competing for 118 cinema locations. NollyPrime reads the calendar and what it means for screen allocation, opening-weekend pressure, and the films most likely to be squeezed out.

April 2026 is one of the most stacked theatrical months Nigerian cinema has had in a non-December window. Five Nollywood titles are in or entering the market simultaneously across the month, competing for a screen count that Nigeria’s 118 cinema locations can only distribute so many ways. What the calendar produces is a set of commercial conditions where some films will be squeezed off screens before they have found their full audience, and where the order and speed of opening-weekend declarations will determine screen allocation for everything that follows.

Trade by Bata (April 11), The Other Side of the Bridge (April 17), Avante (April 18), and A Spark in the Dark (April 24) are all arriving within a thirteen-day window. The Return of Arinzo opened April 3 and is running ahead of all of them. That concentration is commercially unusual and logistically demanding.

A Spark in the Dark, directed by Akay Mason and produced by Dolly Nwaduba, opens April 24 with a cast that includes Blossom Chukwujekwu, Gideon Okeke, Daniel Etim Effiong, Tope Olowoniyan, Venita Akpofure, and Eso Dike. The premise — a young woman who loses her sight following a kitchen accident, testing a relationship that has not yet been stress-tested — is intimate, character-driven, and deliberately unlike everything else on the April slate. In a month dominated by action, sequels, and sports drama, the romantic drama that requires an audience to sit with emotional quietness rather than spectacle is operating against the prevailing energy.

Avante (Toka McBaror, April 18) brings Chimezie Imo back to cinema in a thriller about vengeance, love, and destiny produced by Afrisquare Entertainment. McBaror has a demonstrated ability to build tension across a run time without losing the audience, and Chimezie Imo’s recent theatrical work — including the currently-circulating festival film at NollywoodWeek — has established him as a name that carries genuine theatrical presence. The opening weekend will test whether that presence converts to April attendance.

The screen arithmetic of this month is simple and unforgiving: exhibitors give screens to what is performing. A film that opens to ₦30 million on its first weekend in a month where another title opened to ₦104.8 million will be cut within days. The quality of what you made matters. The weekend you open into matters just as much.

April 2026 theatrical calendar: The Return of Arinzo (Apr 3) · Trade by Bata (Apr 11) · The Other Side of the Bridge (Apr 17) · Avante (Apr 18) · A Spark in the Dark (Apr 24).
