A Spark in the Dark Opens April 24. The Quiet Film in a Loud Month.

April has been a month of action, sequels, and franchise energy. A Spark in the Dark opens April 24 and is none of those things. Akay Mason directs a film about blindness, love under pressure, and what happens when a relationship meets something it was not built for. Gideon Okeke, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Daniel Etim Effiong in the cast. The quiet film in a loud month.

Film · Opening This Week

April has been a month of noise. The Return of Arinzo opened to ₦104.8 million on Easter weekend with a pan-African cast and a franchise fanbase that was never going to stay home. Trade by Bata followed on April 11 on the momentum of KieKie’s Gingerrr run. The Other Side of the Bridge and Avante both opened within days of each other, adding a sports drama and an action thriller to a calendar that was already crowded. Five Nollywood titles competing for 118 cinema locations simultaneously is not a comfortable situation for anyone trying to hold screen allocation past opening weekend.

On April 24, A Spark in the Dark opens into all of that. And it is a different kind of film from everything around it.

Directed by Akay Mason and produced by Dolly Nwaduba, the film follows Kate — played by Tope Olowoniyan — a young influencer whose life reconfigures entirely after a kitchen accident leaves her blind. The relationship she has been building with Melvin Obiora is tested not by betrayal or external threat but by the specific pressure that serious disability places on love that has not yet been stress-tested. The cast includes Blossom Chukwujekwu, Gideon Okeke, Daniel Etim Effiong, Eso Dike, and Venita Akpofure.

The film is asking an April audience — tired from an action sequel, two thrillers, and a cultural comedy — to slow down and sit with something interior. That is a commercial challenge that the industry does not talk about enough. The audience that will come for A Spark in the Dark is not the audience that came for The Return of Arinzo. They are a different group with a different appetite, and the question is whether the month has exhausted their cinema-going budget before their film arrives.

Gideon Okeke is in the cast. He is also, as of three weeks ago, fresh off the most critically discussed Nigerian film performance of 2026 so far in Headless. His presence in A Spark in the Dark will bring some of that critical attention with him — audiences who saw Headless and paid attention to what he was doing there will notice his name on this poster.

The film opens April 24. Give it the room it needs to find its audience. Not every film in a crowded month is trying to win the same race.

A Spark in the Dark — opens April 24, 2026. Dir. Akay Mason · Prod. Dolly Nwaduba · Starring Tope Olowoniyan, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Gideon Okeke, Daniel Etim Effiong, Venita Akpofure.
